What an amazing beginning of the year !

Mriver-7-pola copy

This year I decided to go to Western Australia for my off-season training. For past 7 years I’ve been going to Cape Town during this time of the year, and I was very sad that I won’t see South Africa this year. However, since I arrived to oz, I am so thankful to have an opportunity to visit place like this. Blue sky, amazing views, lots of trees and super nice people.

Below  you can see few polaroids from our amazing trip to Margaret River last weekend, it was just amazing. And of course followed by a perfect kite session in Augusta !

Being here is like being in a paradise, where everybody is having fun and follow their passion.

After the 1st of January everyone’s head is full of new year’s resolutions. I don’t want to enumerate all of mine resolutions here because it would be like a never ending list. But one of them it’s to improve my blog, with writing about my lifestyle, travels, training routines and other trivial stuff that I do and learn from traveling around the world :P. If there is anything you want to read on my blog, don’t hesitate writing to me and I will  try to put it in.

So as I just promise, today I am going to write about the Australian slang, that I think everybody should get familiar with before traveling to. It was really strange for me when I arrived to Australia the first time and had realized that the english I know was not sufficient there and that I couldn’t understand some of the local people. For a foreigner like me it’s hard sometimes to understand others accent and here not only the accent but also words were new to me. Of course everybody knows the most popular australian phrase “g’day mate” and know that “oz” or “down under” is simply Australia.

But when I came there last year I didn’t know that I will have to start learning english once again to communicate with others. Most of the word are just shorten, like veggies, bathers, lollies, sunnies and they were the easiest to figure out its meaning. But there are also more complicated ones that you need to know, like “arvo” means afternoon, “oy” is simply hey and my favorite one “spag bog” that turned out to be a spagetti bolognese.mehat3 As you see you can get pretty confused when you get invited for “a barbie this arvo” so below I post few ozzie’s words that I think are important to know before going Down Under.

australianslangSo come visit my blog more often, because it’s going to be more colorful and more fun that it was before !!!

I know that in europe the winter is just starting, and you are probably going to hate me for posting these amazing pictures from sunny and windy Australia, but it’s a part of my job to keep you informed  :)

Yep, it was another amazing trip. Melbourne  is  definitely- The place to Be as is written on the car plates. The city is perfect for the water sport lovers with beautiful areas for kiteboarding, sailing and swimming. Unlike the rest of Australia, there are no waves for surfing because Melbourne is located around a large bay.

To wrap things up, I went there with my boyfriend to visit our friends Katie and Ewan who both live there. They showed us the best places for kiteboarding such as Altona and St.Kilda marina and took us all around the place. I had a great week and couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity ! Thanks a lot everyone ! MElbourne-13

Unfortunately this trip ends up here… but my journey continues to another amazing place for kiteboarding !!!

Anyone who has seen Karolina Winkowska ride knows just how hard she rips. This girl is as powerful and skilled as they come and boasts a bag of tricks most male pros can’t match.

For the past three years Karolina has traveled the world killing it at local spots and dominating the PKRA. When we say we have someone on our team that, “Kites like a girl,” we say it with pride!

So what exactly does it mean to “Kite Like a Girl?” Well, it means to kite like Karolina… Don’t we all wish we could?

Going this year to china i didn’t know what to expect because it’s such a big country that surprise you everyday. 10423720003_73b2e7d302_o

The first pkra event was held in Pingtan, which is located 1:30h flight up north from hong kong and the other event was held in Haikou 1:30h flight down south from HKG. The hotel was 20m away from the beach where the competition was held. I went straight there and what I saw was just beyond my expectations. Sunny, 2-3m waves and perfect 20-25knots wind.

I took my cute 7m kite and went to check out the conditions. It was similar to riding in a Big bay in Cape town !!! Loved it. I was so happy to be there and so surprised about the good conditions. It was just amazing and everything started so quickly that I did’t realize when the competition had started.

<<piiiiiiiiiiiipppppp!!!>> I heard the horn announcing the beginning of the first heat of the day. My preparation routine has started with pumping 3 different kite sizes, then waiting for my heat, warming up, checking out the conditions, watching guys heats, putting a competition t-shirt on… And boom! I was going to the water to have my first heat after 3 months break. I love that feeling, when you get out there, wait 3min during the transition time and think ‘it is starting, you can’t go back! 3min 2min 1min and Go!!! 10535228625_a8e847a19d_o

The heat starts and ends up so quickly, that the next thing you know is that the time is over, the single elimination is over, the double and the whole competition is done. 7min heat is definitely not enough when the conditions are tough. We have only 12 tries so is around 30 seconds to do a trick, if the conditions are perfect of course. Pingtan had pretty strong current and big waves so it took much more time to do a trick, go up wind and do another one.

My heats were pretty good, I won the single elimination, but I lost in the doubles so I got second place. I think that I lost concentration during on the last day of the event because I wanted to win so badly that I forgot about doing tricks properly.

I had a pretty long break before coming to China because of MCL injury. It took me two months of crazy rehab to get back to water. Everyday I did an Ironman like training. In the morning I had a cryochamber, then a gym sesh, and at the end of the day physiotherapy. I went to China to win, to prove that I can the world champion again. But it didn’t happen.

The other event was in Haikou at the Hainan island, where I won last year. I was ready to do it again, I trained a lot with 13m kite because, the wind was really light or absent previously.10707982886_59ce42393f_o

This year booooom!!! The wind came from typhoon and it was strong.

During the single elimination I had pretty easy road to the final where I met Gisela once again. My heat with her was pretty relaxed and I did’t show my real powerful style. I was doing tricks one after the other but nothing with a bang! On the other side Gisela was attacking and had landed a pretty nice front to blind which gave her highest score in the single elimination. I had the second chance in the double elimination.10707852764_de63fb1459_o

Next day the wind was stronger and I was coming to the beach with a hope. My strategy was to do everything better than the day before, with grabs and with better style. When I went to warm up, I wasn’t sure about which kite should I take 7m or 9m. The wind was changing, rain was coming and going it was ugly and miserable. I decided to take the 9m. First I had a heat with Annabel to defend my 2 place, I won it, and got to the final again. Gisela took a 7m kite, me 9m kite. It was pretty windy but there the wind was dropping all the time., I decide to take bigger kite to have more power and get better scores. Once we had started, the wind just died to zero.

They cancelled the heat and we began again after 20min. I did few tricks but nothing special again, I was straggling with windy gusts and choppy waves. When the heat was over I knew I lost. I didn’t have to go and ask about that, my adrenaline was moving slowly from the top into my stomach and stopped there making me feel like someone had stabbed me. That’s the feeling of losing the world title …

This is the end of the season, now is time for HOLIDAYS !!!

KArolina !

Thanks to my dad who was helping during these two events ! I love you !

The PKRA in Germany is the biggest kiteboarding event on the planet. With the most riders registered and the most spectators at the beach !

101 riders signed up for the freestyle division with only 24 places in the men main event and 12places in the women. Luckily I was already prequalified so I could have chill out during the 8h elimination.

The event was pretty long, because it was like 10 days, and everybody got really tired of waiting for the wind. We waited and waited for ever… and the wind forecast was predicting only one day of good wind, so I knew this will be the tough one. We started really early to complete the single and double elimination in one day, so from 8am to 8pm, we were running the heats non-stop.

When eventually my heat in the single elimination began, I was so stoked, because I was waiting for it for so long … Unfortunately in the first heat I met my polish friend Kasia, and I had to eliminate her to go up. Next one it was already Bruna, and that was the toughest heat of a day for me.

First of all I was confused with which kite I should take, because she was competing on a 9m kite, and I on my 7m kite. But it was a perfect decision for me because I had enough power, and I had pretty sick heat. I knew that her trick performance is pretty good and so I tried to do my tricks as perfectly as possible. Especially when the judges count only 5 tricks, the most important is the execution of the trick.

I won that heat and went to the final with Gisela who was coming from another side of the ladder. This time the wind dropped off and I could have taken my favorite kite size, the 9m fuel, I was so happy about it, because it’s not often when I can use my 9m during the competition.9324072323_99880e4a32_b

So I started again with some good tricks, I had very powerful bj3, 313 and smobe so I won this heat with 3 points, which is a lot compering to my loose in Sicily for 0.12 points.

So now I was the lucky one, because I was at the top of the ladder, waiting for the best rider in the double elimination to come and fight with me. It was a very long day and I was tired after the singles, but I had 6h before my final heat so I easily recovered from that.

When I was waiting for my final heat, there was a heat between Bruna and Gisela. I was watching in from a distance, because I was testing my kites. But at the end of it I saw Bruna making a massive kiteloop, and crushing it really hard. She was the one who won that heat and she was the one that should come to the final with me. Unfortunately, she had injured her leg and couldn’t compete any more … So I became the winner !

That wasn’t the best ending of the competition because, the other girl couldn’t compete and that made me a champion. But that’s how the competitions work, you have to be top form all the time and ready for the bad luck.

Now I have a little holidays before the next pkra in FUERTAVENTURA that starts on  the 30 July :)

Yuuuuuuhuuuuu, I won the 2nd place at the PKRA in Sicily !!!

After being a looser of 0,12 points and my big disappointment in the finals I realized that there is no use crying over the spilt milk. It wasn’t my first event and it wasn’t my first loose during the pkra, and because my positivity is above all I want to share my positive experiences from the trip.

The week in Sicily was quite special for me, because not only my mum was there, but also my brother, my sister in low, my aunt and other Polish spectators who came all way to Sicily to watch my performance and to support me. What’s more there were 3 polish Girls competing in the main event, and I could say that women division was dominated by the polish kiteboarders.

Meanwhile my brother was commenting our heats in Polish in the livestrem office.  Screen Shot 2013-06-29 at 6.02

During the event we didn’t have much wind but it was a perfect occasion for me to sit down on my butt and do nothing at once. Well not really nothing … my job was to wait for the wind : ). 1043976_572735952769794_1334442505_n

Eventually the wind showed up for the trials and the single elimination, and that was the most amazing thing during that week. Not only I could have watched the best riders in the world kiting in front of me, but also I could have shown my best kite performance in front of you guys !!! 1002767_573858199324236_128412630_n

During all my heats I was feeling amazing, I was feeling that people are happy watching me and that I am happy showing my best to the people at the beach and also to the ones watching the livestream – like my dad :) There is nothing better in the world than being surrounded with your fans who admire you and tell you how awesome you are.

Hearing the bad news about my loose it made me sad a little bit, but not for long! Because I know that it’s not the end of the world and I’ll have many other occasions to prove that I am the BEST.

And to make me feel better I got a XXXL chupa chup full of candies as a trophy, omnomnomnom :DScreen shot 2013-07-02 at 11.20.25 AM

to be continue …
